The quarterback position receives a lot of attention every NFL season, and 2024 will be no exception. As clubs begin their season preparations in training camp, everyone will be paying close attention to the various quarterback situations across the league.
For other clubs, that means determining whether an outstanding quarterback can maintain his dominance. Others are looking to see if a rookie quarterback can make the move to the next level. Some teams will also focus on the backup quarterback competition.
That is the category into which the New Orleans Saints fall. Derek Carr, who returns for his second season with the Saints in 2024, is the undisputed starter. However, Carr lacks a defined backup plan. Second-year quarterback Jake Haener and rookie Spencer Rattler are the two candidates that could fill the position.
Dennis Allen, the team’s head coach, has stated that a wide-open training camp competition will determine the outcome.
In a recent interview with ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, Allen stated that Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler will compete for the Saints’ QB2 slot during training camp.
Jake Haener has significantly more experience than Rattler, having been picked in the fourth round of the 2023 selection. However, his one season in the NFL was marred by a six-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy. Still, Haener had the opportunity to spend the year working with Jon Gruden and learning how to be an NFL quarterback.
Spencer Rattler, on the other side, was taken in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft. He was previously thought to be a top draft pick, despite being selected in the middle of the round. Many believe Rattler still has skill, and it will take the ideal circumstances to bring it out. The Saints hope they are in that predicament.
Both players are trying to be New Orleans’ No. 2 quarterback. It is seldom certain whether a team will carry three quarterbacks into a season, therefore Rattler and Haener may also compete for a roster berth.
