The Atlanta Braves selected Cam Caminiti, an LSU baseball signee and left-handed pitcher, with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 2024 Major League Baseball draft.
Caminiti pitched 52⅔ innings for Saguaro High in Arizona, striking out 119 batters. He had a 0.93 ERA and led the Sabercats to the state championship.
He was also voted Arizona’s Gatorade Player of the Year and the top left-handed high school pitcher in this year’s draft, according to MLB.com and ESPN.
His cousin, Ken Caminiti, was a three-time MLB All-Star and MVP winner at third base. He was in the major leagues for 15 seasons.
Caminiti is one of two LSU signees who pitch left-handed. The Tigers also signed Boston Bateman, a top-60 prospect in MLB.com’s draft rankings.
LSU also boasts left-handed pitchers Nate Ackenhausen, Griffin Herring, and Gauge Jump who are draft eligible. Herring and Jump were invited to the MLB draft combine in Arizona back in June.
