According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the San Diego Padres may be a suitable fit for Rockies catcher Elias Díaz as the trade deadline approaches. The team is aiming to bolster its squad despite dealing with injuries and remaining in the playoff race. They are now 7.5 games behind the Dodgers in the National League West and are in good position to make the Wild Card.
“Last year’s All-Star Game MVP was having a strong June (.357/.419/.536 in eight games) before a calf strain landed him on the injured list for nearly three weeks,” Feinsand tells us. “Díaz returned on June 30 and picked up where he left off; he’s hitting .306 with a .790 OPS this season, and with less than $3 million owed to him before he hits free agency this offseason, the 33-year-old could be one of the few impactful catchers moved this month.”
Despite a recent calf injury, Díaz has been doing well this season, hitting.306 with an OPS of.790. His offensive stats include five home runs and 29 RBIs, making him an important player for any squad.
The Padres’ current catching lineup, anchored by Luis Campusano, has encountered its own set of issues. Campusano has suffered with injuries and has already played more games this season than any other year. Adding Díaz might provide the Padres an offensive lift.
