The Houston Astros have quietly surged back from a dismal start to the season, taking sole possession of first place in the AL West with a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night.
The victory was highlighted by a memorable home run theft, and the Astros’ outfielder used the opportunity to deliver a fun message to Mariners great Julio Rodriguez after taking his home run away.
With the Astros leading 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Rodriguez hit a fly ball deep to right field that appeared to be heading for the bleachers, but Trey Cabbage leaped to make the catch near the wall before putting up Julio’s iconic “no fly zone” celebration.
Rodriguez laughed at the gesture and thanked Cabbage for the spectacular catch, demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship because Julio understands what it’s like to take away a home run.
Julio hit a two-run drive in the sixth inning to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead, but they quickly gave it back in the seventh on a two-run shot by Jake Meyers, putting Houston up 3-2 and giving the Astros the lead for good.
Cabbage hasn’t done much at the plate this season, with a.637 OPS, but his glove has helped him win a spot in the lineup as Kyle Tucker recovers from an injury.
The Mariners have now lost five games in a row, giving up first place in the division, and they’ll aim to prevent a sweep on Sunday.
