The Seattle Mariners lead the American League West heading into today’s MLB games. But how do they remain there? Making additions before the MLB trade deadline on July 30 is one way to keep the Houston Astros at bay, who trail Seattle by just one game.
The Mariners have been active in trade talks this summer, which is fortunate since, despite their impressive start, they could use a lot of assistance. Despite being in first position in their division, the Mariners have scored the fewest runs among their AL West opponents. Naturally, this means Seattle must focus on upgrading their batting lineup, which is nothing new.
However, assistance could be on the way in the shape of a trade for a previous MVP winner.
Cody Bellinger could be a Seattle Mariners trade target.
If the Seattle Mariners are serious about improving their offence, they may need to be willing to accept a sizable salary. One potential alternative is to trade for Chicago Cubs outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger.
Bellinger’s deal calls for a salary of $27.5 million this season. Then Bellinger has to decide whether to exercise his player option for an additional $27.5 million next season. If he struggles, he may opt in; yet, if he excels, Bellinger may return to the open market in pursuit of a larger reward.
In any case, the 2019 NL MVP has once again emerged as a potential trade candidate as the Chicago Cubs slide to last place in the NL Central. If available, one MLB insider believes the Mariners might emerge as a plausible trade destination for the 29-year-old.
“If the Chicago Cubs fall much further behind, they may decide to trade Cody Bellinger, providing there is a market for him, as he has two player option years remaining at $30 million per year and is on the injured list with a fractured finger. The Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees may both be interested in Bellinger for different reasons: Seattle struggles to hit, and New York is injured. – ESPN’s Jesse Rogers links the Seattle Mariners to the Cody Bellinger trade.
