Former Florida State player Cam Smith has officially signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs. According to Carlos Collazo of Baseball America, the Cubs signed the first-round draft pick for $5.07 million on Saturday afternoon.

Smith started at Florida State in 2023 and made an immediate impact. Smith had a.258 batting average in 51 games, with 54 hits, eight doubles, five triples, 12 home runs, 36 RBIs, and 39 runs scored. He ranked second on the squad in runs, hits, and walks (21).

Smith took a significant step forward in 2024, becoming as a top prospect. He led the Seminoles in batting average (.387) and struck out only 48 times in 269 at-bats. Smith also had 16 home runs, 57 RBIs, and 82 runs scored.

Smith’s performance sent Florida State to the Men’s College World Series for the first time since 2019. He blasted two home runs in consecutive games against UCF in the NCAA regionals and went 5-for-9 against Uconn in the super regionals. Smith doubled in his first two games of the College World Series and scored a run in a victory over North Carolina.

“It’s a dream come true,” Smith said on the 11Point7 podcast after competing in the Men’s College World Series. “I’ve always been a Florida State fan and just to know inside that I’m playing for Florida State baseball with this uniform on in Omaha, there’s nothing better.”

Smith attended Palm Beach Central High School in Wellington, Florida, and played baseball there. Perfect Game graded him as the top shortstop in Florida and the 53rd best prospect in the US.

Cam Smith explains what he contributes to MLB.
Smith’s ability to recognize his own strengths and limitations is one of his distinguishing characteristics. “So, one thing about me, anything I hit is pretty much opposite field,” Smith remarked while mic’d up during MCWS batting practice at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, according to MLB.com. “Just go straight opposite field to get the feel of staying inside the ball. “You’ll rarely see me pull the ball in BP.”

Smith was ranked among the top 100 prospects for the 2022 MLB Draft. He earned a No. 14 ranking from MLB this year after playing at Florida State the previous two years and spending time in the Cape Cod League.

According to Smith’s scouting report, he “already looks the part” and has lots of strength. How much he hits will influence how regularly he can tap into his tremendous raw power, and he answered that question well last summer and this spring.”
