The Los Angeles Dodgers have made an unusual move to clear a roster slot ahead of the return of several key pitchers.
The Dodgers designated pitcher James Paxton for assignment on Monday, despite the fact that he has taken every turn in the rotation this season. Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow were both scheduled to return from the injured list this week, so the organization needed to free up roster spots.
Many Dodgers fans were stunned by the move, pointing out that Paxton has been consistent all season and has shown some signs of progress in recent appearances.
Paxton’s numbers aren’t necessarily impressive. He has a 4.43 ERA after 18 starts, and his 48 walks in 89.1 innings lead the league. However, the veteran lefty had gobbled up innings for the Dodgers in a season in which they have struggled to maintain their pitching staff healthy.
The Dodgers made this trade because they are expecting help. It is still somewhat shocking, given the status of their staff.
