The Philadelphia Phillies may be looking to the opposite end of the division for reinforcements.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reported Monday that the Phillies are keeping a “close eye” on Miami Marlins All-Star closer Tanner Scott. Nightengale also mentions that the Phillies “badly” need another late-inning reliever.
Scott, 30, who pitches for the NL East rival Marlins, has had a successful year in 2024. He has a 1.27 ERA and 16 saves in 18 attempts for Miami this season. Scott has also struck out 11.9 batters per nine innings in his MLB career and is currently on a 28-game hitless streak (his last hit came on June 25).
The 35-64 Marlins look to be inching closer to trading Scott before the July 30 deadline, which could be due in part to the fact that he will be a free agency after the season. But that should be a risk well worth taking for the Phillies, who have the best record in baseball (63-36) and might benefit from an upgrade over erratic closer Jose Alvarado (1-4 with a 4.24 ERA this season).
