The Miami Heat fans can finally celebrate after a somewhat monotonous winter, as the team won the NBA Summer League championship on Monday.
The Heat defeated the Memphis Grizzlies in an overtime thriller, with the final score of 120. Former first-round selection Josh Christopher delivered when it mattered most, hitting a stepback three-pointer with the Grizzlies only two points away from victory.
He finished the night with 24 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks while shooting 6 of 10 from beyond the arc. Christopher received MVP honours during the championship game. Second-round choice Pelle Larsson hit the game-winning shot on a difficult drive to the basket, which was immediately followed by jubilation. Larsson scored 16 points and four assists in Monday’s game, but his contribution to the Heat’s championship run was much more important.
Rookie Kel’el Ware and agile forward Alondes Williams also made significant contributions, totaling 42 points and 15 rebounds on efficient shooting. Ware’s performance in Las Vegas earned him a spot on the All-Summer League First Team, while emerging talent Jaime Jaquez Jr. made the second.
While this is not the championship supporters were expecting for, it is encouraging to know that the Heat’s future is full with promise.
