The New York Yankees are allegedly interested in bringing back a familiar face ahead of the MLB trade deadline on July 30.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi said on Tuesday that the American League East squad is interested in Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green, who worked for the Yankees from 2016 to 2022.
Morosi cited a variety of reasons why the Yankees may consider trading for Green, including his popularity during his initial stay with the team and his ability to close or pitch in high-leverage situations early in the game from the bullpen.
He would also not be a rental player because he is under team control through the 2025 season and may contribute to the team’s chase of the following two World Series victories.
Green has been a bright spot in the Blue Jays’ otherwise poor season, with a 1.88 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 24 strikeouts, and seven saves in 28 games. That is already a career high in saves, and his ERA would be the second-lowest of his career, trailing only the 1.83 he had for the Yankees in 2017.
Mike Axisa of CBS Sports and John Coppolella of Yahoo Sports identified further bullpen help and depth as a key need for New York as the trade deadline approaches.
Acquiring Green would help address that need while also taking away from a division foe that the team will face later this season.
He would also provide another good late-inning option, alongside Clay Holmes, allowing manager Aaron Boone to shorten games if the Yankees enter the playoffs.
New York is currently in second place in the American League East, 1.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles. It also has the top AL wild-card berth and is firmly in the postseason race, despite going 11-21 in its last 32 games and struggling coming into the All-Star break.
A successful trade deadline might help turn things around, and Green would be an excellent addition to the bullpen.
