The Dallas Mavericks approached the offseason with a clear goal of upgrading the roster around Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
They made it to the NBA Finals but lost to the Boston Celtics because their role players failed to make an impact.
Dallas got Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes this summer, but their most recent addition is a throwback to the past.
Mavs news: Spencer Dinwiddie re-signs with Dallas
According to Shams Charania, the Dallas Mavericks and guard Spencer Dinwiddie have agreed on a one-year contract.
Last season, he began the year with the Brooklyn Nets before being dealt to the Raptors. He was subsequently bought out and chose to join the Los Angeles Lakers, despite considerable interest from Dallas.
The 31-year-old now provides Dallas with a quality role player off the bench who can relieve either Doncic or Irving when needed. The Colorado product can create its own shot while maintaining good vision as a passer.
During his 2021-22 postseason run with Dallas, he averaged 14.2 points, 3.6 assists, and shot 41.7% from three. Dinwiddie has an average of 13.3 points, three rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game across his 10-year career.
As the Mavericks attempt to build on a successful season in 2023-24, they have added veterans with playoff experience.
Having veterans on your bench pays off as the season progresses. They lacked that in the NBA Finals, and Nico Harrison made it a point to rectify that for the following season.
