The Pittsburgh Steelers made a decisive move regarding running back Najee Harris by declining to exercise his fifth-year option for the 2024 season, turning it into a contract year for the former first-round pick.
The decision had been uncertain leading up to the deadline, with the Steelers keeping their plans closely guarded throughout the offseason. Upon the announcement that they would not pick up his option, Harris expressed initial disappointment but quickly shifted his focus to the upcoming season.
“I was disappointed for a moment,” Harris acknowledged. “But dwelling on it wouldn’t change anything for the better. It is what it is, and my priority now is to contribute to the team and perform at my best. Yes, I felt it for a bit, maybe a couple of days, but it passed quickly.”
As Harris prepares for 2024, he faces uncertainty about his future with the Steelers, as the team has expressed openness to negotiating a new deal but has not yet initiated talks. Despite this, Harris has made clear his desire to stay in Pittsburgh beyond this season.
“Absolutely,” Harris affirmed when asked if he wants to remain a Steeler. “I enjoy being here in Pittsburgh. I have a great relationship with Coach T, Mr. Rooney, Omar, and even Kevin Colbert during his tenure here. It’s a wonderful city with friendly and welcoming people.
“However, I understand the business side of the sport. I’ve grown up around it, and I’ve always believed in being in control of my journey, with God guiding my path. Wherever I end up, whether it’s here or elsewhere, I’ll give my all to that team. That’s the mindset you need in this sport.”
Both Harris and Jaylen Warren, the Steelers’ top two running backs, are entering contract years without ongoing negotiations for long-term deals.
While this decision does not necessarily spell the end for either player in Pittsburgh, it raises questions about the team’s backfield heading into 2025.
