There’s no telling what the Minnesota Twins will do before the July 30 MLB trade deadline. As usual, most indicators point to the front office doing almost nothing. Ownership spending limitations do not help.
It also doesn’t help that so many teams are caught in the middle of the pack, unsure whether they’ll be buyers or sellers. That is not the Twins. Although they are still pursuing the Cleveland Guardians, their odds of entering the playoffs are very good.
In a perfect scenario, the Twins would be one of the top purchasers at the deadline. However, it is never that straightforward. Parting with high-potential prospects to fill a few minor needs entails a lot of risk, especially if they can’t compete with the greatest teams in MLB.
But there’s always the possibility that the Twins will surprise everyone and make a significant addition at the deadline. Sometimes the finest addition is removal.
Could the Twins deal Manuel Margot?
Outfielder Manuel Margot is one guy the Twins could most likely afford to deal, especially if they find another upgrade. Sure, he’s great against left-handed pitchers, but the Twins also have Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner, who, although not right-handed batters, are eager for additional opportunities.
But would the Twins really deal Margot? Maybe not, but Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic feels it is conceivable if the Twins can find a substitute who can start against lefties on a regular basis.
Margot presently has the lowest dWAR (defensive wins above replacement) of any position player on the Twins club, at -0.9. He also has the team’s second-lowest OPS, trailing only Christian Vazquez, who contributes as a solid defender. In other words, Margot’s contributions to the Twins are unusual.
While Margot has a decent hitting line versus lefties, he has only hit.184 against righties. That’s difficult to tolerate for a 29-year-old athlete with little upside. Margot may only have a base salary of $4 million, but finding a comparable replacement should be easy. We’ll see if the Twins can pull off such a feat with less than a week to go.
