According to a new report, three of the American League’s top teams — the Houston Astros, the Baltimore Orioles, and the New York Yankees — are all bidding for the same hidden gem pitcher on the trade market.
The Astros, Orioles, and Yankees are all close or at the top of their respective divisions heading into today’s MLB games. However, all three clubs are moving in distinct paths. Houston is one of baseball’s hottest teams, having retaken the AL West lead. New York is in a big slump, but Baltimore has not capitalized and extended their AL East lead.
Interestingly, despite their distinct roster compositions, all three clubs are apparently pursuing the same position before the MLB trade deadline: starting pitching. The Yankees and Orioles have been linked to some of the top names on the market, but the three teams are supposedly focused on a very talented under-the-radar prospect who is allegedly available.
The Baltimore Orioles are among four playoff teams pursuing Jameson Taillon.
“According to sources, the Astros, Orioles, Red Sox, and Yankees are among the teams that have expressed interest in Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon,” MLB Network league insider Mark Feinsand wrote Thursday night.
Taillon has been a rock-solid big league pitcher for the past eight years, with two 14-win seasons on his CV. One of those years was with the Yankees in 2022.
Jameson Taillon stats (2024): 7-5 record, 2.96 ERA, 1.146 WHIP, 78 SO, 21 BB, and 100.1 IP
Before the 2023 season, he signed a four-year, $68 million contract with the Cubs. While he struggled in his debut season, he is having a breakout year for the last-place squad. He isn’t Garrett Crochet. However, for clubs that fall short in their pursuit of the top names on the pitching market, Taillon is an outstanding backup option who may make a difference in the second half.
