— On Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers dealt pitcher James Paxton to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league infielder Moises Bolivar.
Bolivar, a 17-year-old from Venezuela, hit.270 with three home runs and 19 RBIs for the Dominican Summer League Red Sox. In January, he agreed to a minor league contract with Boston that included a $25,000 signing bonus.
Paxton was designated for assignment on Monday, one day after winning a game against the Red Sox. He pitched five innings, allowing three runs and four hits while striking out seven and walking four. In 18 starts with the Dodgers this season, the 35-year-old left-hander went 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA.
The 11-year veteran has pitched for Seattle, the Yankees, Boston, and the Dodgers. Paxton has a 72-40 record with a 3.76 ERA in 174 career starts. He has a career strikeout total of 996 in 940 innings. He was signed by the Dodgers in January to a one-year contract worth $7 million with the option of earning up to $6 million in bonuses.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox placed right-handed pitcher Bryan Mata on the 60-day injured list.
