MLB TRADE UPDATE: Padres Surprisingly Acquire Marlins All-Star In a Blockbuster Trade As Confirmed By Manager Mike Shildt

If the season ended today, the San Diego Padres would enter the playoffs with the third National League Wild Card position.

This is no little accomplishment. The Padres have a lot of talent, but they also lost some big names this summer, including Juan Soto, Blake Snell, and Josh Hader. San Diego had to reorganize and is currently in a stronger overall position than it was at this time last year.

San Diego now has a 55-50 record and appears to be a postseason contender. Things could get even better for them soon, with the trade deadline only four days away. The Padres are anticipated to be aggressive, and The Athletic’s Jim Bowden presented a potential trade that would bring Miami Marlins All-Star Tanner Scott to town.

“Marlins trade (left-handed pitcher) Tanner Scott to Padres for (left-handed pitcher) Robby Snelling,” according to Bowden. “In Snelling, the Marlins would get a 20-year-old lefty with immense upside, and receiving a starting pitching prospect of this calibre for a rental closer would be an outstanding return. Snelling, the 39th overall choice in the 2022 draft, has control concerns, walking 33 in 73 1/3 innings and having a 6.01 ERA this season in Double-A.

“But his stuff is fascinating, and it suggests that he’ll eventually grow into a strong starter. This kind of gamble makes sense for Miami. Meanwhile, the Padres sign an impact lefty closer to complement their impact righty closer, Robert Suárez, which would significantly improve their chances of making the playoffs this season and doing some damage in October.”

This deal is remarkable because it has mostly been related to other teams, such as the New York Yankees or the New York Mets, with the Padres rarely mentioned. Scott has been excellent this season and will be dealt, so perhaps the Padres might contact the Marlins.
