The San Diego Padres, known for making big trades during the season, have made headlines yet again by acquiring one of the best relievers available. Tanner Scott, a left-handed closer, was acquired by the Padres from the Miami Marlins just hours before the trade deadline. This deal is intended to boost their bullpen as they compete for a postseason position.
Details about the trade
In return for Scott, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, the Padres sent the Marlins a package of four prospects. The package was led by starting pitcher Robby Snelling, who was ranked as the 59th top prospect in baseball by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel before the start of the year. The Padres also traded pitcher Adam Mazur and infielders Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears. In addition, the Padres acquired right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing.
Tanner Scott’s Performance
Tanner Scott, the centrepiece of this transaction, has had a strong season for the Marlins. This year, the 30-year-old left-hander earned his first All-Star selection, posting a 1.18 ERA and 18 saves in 44 appearances. Over 45 2/3 innings, Scott struck out 53 batters and walked 27. His performance makes him an important addition to the Padres’ bullpen, which already contains talented relievers such as Robert Suarez, Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon, and the recently acquired Jason Adam.
Padres Bullpen and Rotation Status
The addition of Scott is expected to strengthen the Padres’ bullpen. Despite already obtaining Jason Adam, the Padres chose to enhance their relief pitching over focusing on their starting rotation. This decision comes as the team awaits the return of Yu Darvish, who is on the restricted list, and Joe Musgrove, who is out with an elbow injury for the second time this season.
The Prospects Traded
Robby Snelling, a 20-year-old left-hander, was the 39th overall pick in 2022. Despite his talent, he has struggled in Double-A this season, with a 6.01 ERA over 73 1/3 innings.
Adam Mazur: The 23-year-old starter struggled in the majors, making eight starts, but showed promise at Double-A with a 1.95 ERA in six appearances.
Graham Pauley: Pauley, a 13th-round pick in 2022, joined the major league roster this season but has struggled, going 4-for-32.
Jay Beshears: Beshears, a sixth-round pick in 2023, with a slash line of.261/.373/.377 in 85 games over both Class A levels this season.
Looking ahead.
While the Padres improved their bullpen with the trade of Marlins Tanner Scott, the team may still want to get a starting pitcher before the trade deadline. With key players on the injured and restricted lists, adding rotation depth could be critical to their postseason hopes.
