The Houston Astros have reportedly designated relief pitcher Rafael Montero for assignment, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle writes that Seth Martinez has also been optioned to Triple-A. Both transfers make room on the Astros’ roster for recently acquired players Yusei Kikuchi and Caleb Ferguson.
Kikuchi, an experienced pitcher, will play an important position in the beginning rotation. Ferguson, meanwhile, will add depth to the bullpen. The decision to part ways with Montero is surprising, given that he still has one more season remaining on his $34.5 million contract beyond 2024.
Astros decide to DFA Rafael Montero.
The 33-year-old reliever did well in 2022. He concluded the season with an impressive 2.37 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 68.1 innings of work. Montero took a step backward in 2023, throwing to a 5.08 ERA.
He hasn’t improved much in 2024. Montero presently has a 4.70 ERA in 38.1 innings pitched. He does not resemble the pitcher who was once regarded as one of MLB’s best relievers.
Despite this change, the Astros will still have to pay his contract. It was definitely not an easy decision to make. In the end, Houston made a move that they clearly believe is best for their roster right now.
