The Braves emerged from the trade deadline with Jorge Soler and Luke Jackson, one of the less impressive hauls among contenders, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort.
Alex Anthopoulos recently stated that they looked into the market for a frontline starter but ultimately decided not to pursue any more deals since the value and price did not make sense for Atlanta.
Another fascinating point from the Braves’ president of baseball operations, Anthopoulos, who informed Jeff Francoeur and Brandon Gaudin that Spencer Schwellenbach was the most frequently asked about player in Atlanta’s organization in terms of prospective deals.
Anthopoulos is alluding to big trades since Schwellenbach’s name must be mentioned in connection with an All-Star player. The former two-way player at Nebraska is coming off one of the best performances of his early professional career against the Mets.
In a four-game series, the Braves were down two games going into the weekend, with the Wild Card sliding away from them. Schwellenbach halted the hemorrhage with 11 strikeouts over seven innings of no-run ball.
Schwellenbach is rising as a star for Atlanta. In four July appearances, he has an excellent 2.08 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, and 28:1 K:BB across 26 innings. He possesses a legitimate 5-pitch mix but very little experience as a starting pitcher in general, let alone in the majors.
Nobody is untouchable in the proper deal, but Spencer Schwellenbach is nearly as untouchable as a prospect can get without being off the table entirely. The Braves have been one of baseball’s best companies at spotting their own talent.
The Braves were requested for Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies, Max Fried, Austin Riley, and other players in various trades over the years, but Anthopoulos always declined. Furthermore, practically all of the prospects traded by the Braves over the years have failed to produce anything significant.
So, even if Spencer Schwellenbach is not available, the Braves have great hopes for the youngster. Dana Brown, who is recognized with recognizing superstars such as Spencer Strider and Michael Harris II, has stated that Schwellenbach is the most intriguing player he has ever scouted and drafted.
