There is no doubt among Silver and Black Nation that the Spurs have done well with their rebuild. It’s taking longer than some impatient fans would like, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting success in San Antonio. After all, five championships in 15 years makes frustration understandable, but the rebuild has been comprehensive and will pay dividends in the long run. It already is.
However, the Spurs may be making a mistake in this process, which could put them back further than planned if they do not move Keldon Johnson. Keldon has a lot to give the team if he stays in silver and black, but he may also bring value to San Antonio as a trade chip.
The Spurs should trade Keldon while his value is high.
He is a young guard/forward who can score. The Kentucky Wildcat may start and be the main centre of the offence, or he can come off the bench and assist another outstanding player. KJ is young (24) and has few miles on his legs at this stage, but he is also experienced, having recently completed his fifth year in the league. He has a team-friendly contract in today’s NBA and will most likely be a plug-and-play addition to any team that signs him.
According to a recent report, the Portland Trail Blazers would like to trade Anfernee Simons or Jerami Grant before the season begins. Now is the time to capitalize on a dynamic scorer like that.
With the addition of wing players (Stephon Castle, Harrison Barnes, Vassell, etc.), Johnson becomes expendable. His offensive role in San Antonio has lessened, and with the Spurs in need of some consistent depth and shooting to their forward group, Johnson’s trade should be the next move in the reconstruction.
