The MLB trade deadline has passed, and the Boston Red Sox made five trades in the days leading up to it. The team particularly needed bullpen assistance following the All-Star break, so they acquired two relievers, Lucas Sims and Luis Garcia. However, other players who could have had a more significant impact ended up being traded to different teams.
The reason Boston couldn’t secure a trade for a higher-profile player largely came down to the asking price. According to Red Sox manager Alex Cora on WEEI (via Rob Bradford), “When we inquired about top relievers, the names that came up immediately were Marcelo (Mayer) and Roman (Anthony).”
These two players are Boston’s top prospects and are anticipated to be key assets for the team in the near future.
Anthony has posted a .254 average with an .833 OPS, 13 home runs, 37 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases in 76 games with Double-A Portland this season. Mayer has a .307 average with an .850 OPS, eight home runs, 38 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases in 77 games at the same level.
On July 24, the Red Sox traded with the Toronto Blue Jays for catcher Danny Jansen. Jansen, who debuted in the MLB in 2018 and played with the Blue Jays before the trade, has struggled with a .226 batting average and .313 OBP since 2022, though he maintains a .744 OPS over that period.
Jansen has faced Boston many times throughout his career, including on June 26 this year, when a game at Fenway Park was suspended after less than two innings. The postponed game has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on August 26 at Fenway Park, giving Jansen a chance to achieve a unique milestone.
