On Monday, the Atlanta Hawks traded for David Roddy from the Phoenix Suns, sending E.J. Liddell to Phoenix in exchange.

Liddell, who was acquired by the Hawks on July 6 in a trade involving two first-round picks and high-scoring guard Dejounte Murray, is being traded again within a month. A second-round pick from Ohio State, Liddell was initially selected by New Orleans in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Roddy, drafted 23rd overall by Philadelphia in 2022, had his rights traded to Memphis. In the 2023-24 season, he appeared in 65 games for Memphis and Phoenix, starting 13 of them. He averaged 6.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, with 18 double-figure scoring games and two games where he matched his career-high with 10 rebounds.

The Phoenix Suns made a notable acquisition this offseason by signing point guard Tyus Jones to a veteran’s minimum contract. Reports suggest that Jones is expected to take over as the starting point guard for the Suns. Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro mentions that the Suns plan to use Jones in the starting lineup alongside Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, and Jusuf Nurkic.

Jones stated that he chose the Suns over several other free agent offers and sign-and-trade proposals, feeling that Phoenix presented the best opportunity to maximize his value before returning to free agency next year. The 28-year-old also believes he has joined a “special team.”
