Maybe not the roster update everyone is looking for, but the Cleveland Browns did make a roster change on Tuesday.
On Monday, the Browns received a scare when DE Za’Darius Smith was carried off the field. Smith was a key member of Cleveland’s new defensive line last season, which led to the league’s best defence.
Thankfully, Smith’s injury was a bone bruise, but the veteran defence may lose some time, at least throughout training camp.
Smith was not one of the three players mentioned in the Brandon Aiyuk trade rumours because of his importance to the team, age, and new contract.
Given the team’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, and DE Myles Garrett’s gradual return to practice, adding another defensive end might be beneficial. Cleveland allegedly did as much by signing DE. Marcus Haynes:
Haynes, an undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion, was cut by the Houston Texans in May with an injury designation. He had just joined with the UFL on Friday, with former Browns running back Hasaan Hall.
Hayes totaled 102 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks across four seasons at Old Dominion.
