With the 2024 NFL preseason officially over, the Cleveland Browns are beginning to reduce their training camp roster from 90 to 53 players.
Before the roster deadline on Tuesday, the Browns will make several cuts at various positions. Some players will clear waivers and possibly rejoin Cleveland’s practice squad, while others may pursue other NFL and professional football options.
Cleveland Browns insider Brad Stainbrook reports that veteran linebacker Caleb Johnson has been dismissed.
The 26-year-old linebacker was re-signed by the Browns earlier this month after being dismissed in late July. Johnson was signed to a reserve/futures deal in January, after the Browns’ season finished.
The 6-foot-1 linebacker recorded five total tackles in the Browns’ preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks. Johnson made nine total tackles in the preseason.
Johnson might be brought back on the practice squad by the Browns, who signed him to a futures/reserves contract. With Johnson out of the picture, the Browns will continue to pare down their linebacker corps.
Players like Marvin Moody, Landon Honeycutt, Winston Reid, and Nathaniel Watson may be on the bubble as the roster deadline approaches. Among the four defenders, Watson has the best chance of making the 53-man roster in Week 1.
Johnson worked on the practice squads of the New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Arizona Cardinals before to joining Cleveland. He debuted in the league with the Chicago Bears in 2021.
