The Houston Astros have agreed to terms with free agent outfielder Jason Heyward, subject to a physical, a source told ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel.
The Los Angeles Dodgers designated Heyward for assignment last Thursday, after 15 years with the team.
The Astros, who have a 3½-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the American League West, might benefit from additional outfielders.
Left fielder Mauricio Dubon missed Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies due to an injury sustained in a collision with the outfield wall during the Astros’ victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
And three-time All-Star Kyle Tucker has been out since June 3 with a shin ailment, but the organization expects him to return next month.
Heyward, who turns 35 this month, is hitting.208 with six home runs and 28 RBIs in 63 games in 2024.
He has a career.257 hitter with 180 home runs and 709 RBIs in 1,766 games with the Atlanta Braves (2010-14), St. Louis Cardinals (2015), Chicago Cubs (2016-22), and Dodgers.
He has appeared in 43 playoff games, winning the World Series with the Cubs in 2016.
Atlanta selected Heyward in the first round (14th overall) in 2007, and he made his first All-Star appearance as a rookie in 2010. He won five Gold Gloves for right field (2012, 2014, and 2017).
MLB.com first reported that Heyward and the Astros were nearing an agreement.
