During the 2023 NFL season, the New Orleans Saints showed some potential, with experienced quarterback Derek Carr taking over under centre and the squad motivated to make the playoffs and win the NFC South.
Unfortunately, the Saints did not anticipate the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to recover so quickly after losing Tom Brady to retirement, as they were able to remain competitive with veteran Baker Mayfield leading the way, eventually winning the division instead.
The Saints fell just short of making the playoffs, which was perhaps a difficult pill to chew given the changes that were expected to result in a postseason spot being secured during the 2023 season.
Heading into the 2024 NFL season, the Saints will face even greater competition in their division, with the Atlanta Falcons potentially rising as a force to be reckoned with now that Kirk Cousins is at quarterback and the team is making other aggressive attempts to reclaim its NFC crown.
With the Buccaneers and Falcons projected to make more noise in 2024, the Saints can’t afford to skip a beat, which makes their newest move shocking, as they released running back/kick returner Kene Nwangwu due to a failed medical, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.
Nwangwu played the first three seasons of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings before joining the Saints, who have now placed him on waivers.
New Orleans will try to rebound while making another push at the playoffs, but how things go for Carr and company remains to be seen.
