The San Francisco 49ers may be prepared to trade wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Carolina Panthers. This move comes as the team prepares to make roster cutbacks for the 2024 NFL season, and conversations are expected to continue until the trade deadline.
The 49ers just signed Brandon Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million contract extension, fueling speculation about Samuel’s future with the team. With Trent Williams holding out for a new contract and Brock Purdy also due for a new deal, the 49ers face a tight salary cap position in 2025, with a projected deficit of more than $28 million. Trading Samuel might perhaps reduce some of the financial load.
The Panthers, under new head coach Dave Canales, are aiming to improve their offence and give quarterback Bryce Young more weapons. They’ve already made progress by selecting Jonathon Brooks and Ja’Tavion Sanders and dealing for Diontae Johnson. However, they still need a quality player to boost their offence, especially since veteran Adam Thielen is 34 years old. At 28, Samuel would be a valuable acquisition to the Panthers.
He had a solid 2023 season, racking up 1,038 receiving yards and seven touchdowns while also displaying his ability to get yards after the catch. His versatility and expertise would not only help Young develop, but also act as a mentor to youngster Jonathan Mingo, who has a similar playing style.
