According to Mike Klis, the Denver Broncos have signed linebacker Kristian Welch. In a related move, they waived undrafted rookie linebacker Levelle Bailey to create room for Welch on the 53-man roster.
Welch played college football at the University of Iowa, where he was a team captain and starter for one season. He went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft and later signed with the Baltimore Ravens. He spent three seasons with them. In 2023, he signed with the Green Bay Packers after being waived by the Ravens in the final round of cuts.
Welch has only played 44 defensive snaps during his four-year career. He has 27 tackles on the season thus far, but he excels on special teams. He has 1,101 pictures in the category. Welch is 6’3″ and weighs 240 pounds, which is somewhat more than Bailey, but he lacks his athleticism. However, he had a solid preseason and was one of the more difficult cuts the Packers made, according to Head Coach Matt LeFleur.
The Broncos still have one slot open on their practice squad. If Bailey clears waivers, Broncos fans may anticipate him to return to the Mile High City following a successful training camp and preseason. I was thrilled he made the team, but it appears the Broncos brass was seeking for an impact contributor on special teams with more experience, which Welch surely brings.
