The Denver Broncos acquired former New York Jets draft flop Zach Wilson this offseason to add depth at quarterback.
Wilson was released by the Jets after a three-year stay. The goal was to see if a change of environment might benefit the former No. 2 selection.
At first, reports were not favourable in this regard. Wilson appeared to struggle during summer activities and training camp, leading to speculation that he could be a roster casualty.
This did not happen.
Denver kept three quarterbacks, with rookie Bo Nix being designated starter. Jarrett Stidham is now the second-string quarterback, with Wilson ranked third.
Despite falling behind the two, Denver’s brass seemed to think highly of Wilson. When asked if he believes the BYU product has the potential to be an NFL starter, general manager George Paton responded as follows.
“There is no doubt. He has starter tools all over. It’s been quite cool to watch him with no expectations. He can just go outside and play football. He possesses all of the attributes. He possesses all of the necessary starting attributes. “He’s still working through some issues,” Paton said of Zach Wilson.
“You can see the good and the extremely good from last week’s game. He throws as well as anyone in the league. As I previously stated, he is both intelligent and a wonderful child. He exudes beginning qualities all throughout. “I believe he will be a starter in this league.
Whether this comment was intended to boost Wilson’s public image or for another reason, the youngster has yet to demonstrate that he is a starter-caliber quarterback in the NFL.
Zach Wilson’s career stats: 57% completion, 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, 25 interceptions.
The 25-year-old signal caller was benched many times during the 2023 season, prompting New York to release him. It came after Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury just weeks into the season.
The Broncos have moved on from their disastrous two-year experiment with Russell Wilson.
