Englewood, Colorado — The Denver Broncos have secured their lock-down cornerback.
Pat Surtain II and the Broncos have agreed to a four-year, $96 million contract extension, with $77.5 million guaranteed, according to DNVR sources. Surtain’s deal easily makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Prior to Surtain’s extension, Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers was the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, earning $21 million per year. Surtain’s new contract averages $24 million, which substantially exceeds that figure.
Furthermore, the $77.5 million guaranteed broke the NFL record for the most guaranteed money for a cornerback.
Surtain, 24, has established himself as the NFL’s finest cornerback. Surtain has been awarded a First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler twice in his three seasons in the league.
The Broncos were also quick to sign Surtain to an extension. Surtain became eligible to sign an extension with Denver earlier this year, following the completion of his third season. The team and Surtain reached an agreement to set a record just days before his fourth season began.
According to DNVR, negotiations officially began in the latter week of August, and the agreement was reached late Tuesday night. The transaction took slightly over a week to complete.
Surtain will be with the Broncos for another four years and will have the option to sign another deal when he is only 28 years old.
