Florida Gators football supporters have set up a $26 million GoFundMe account to try to buy out head coach Billy Napier’s contract. After a poor start to the 2024 college football season with a 41-17 loss to the University of Miami, Billy Napier determined that taking a shot at Gators fans “in rural Central Florida” was the proper option.
Napier later apologized for disrespecting the fans.
“I want to make it very clear that was not my intention there,” Napier told the reporter. “I suppose finally, because there was no mention of our fans. I was just thinking of talking about life in general.
“I believe our youth live in an era where social media is a part of their lives. And I believe it is critical if we listen too much to the wrong voice, no matter who it is in life. I have small children, and my wife and I frequently discuss how they will grow up in an era of social media when anybody can say anything. And I believe it is critical that we maintain perspective for our players.
Napier said, “I was in no way referring to supporters, you know? I am thinking about our young folks in general. I would never do that or criticize our fans. We have nothing to do with it. So, in general, our young people are growing up in a different era, and I believe that is part of our responsibility.”
In terms of jobs, Billy Napier is now 11-15, 6-10 in the SEC, since taking coach at Gainesville in 2022.
Napier’s contract buyout totals $26 million.
While the GoFundMe looks unlikely to succeed, the message is obvious.
Meanwhile, the University of Central Florida is having a lot of fun with Billy Napier’s comments.
