The Cleveland Browns’ 2024 season opener versus the Dallas Cowboys at Huntington Bank Field is only two days away. When quarterback Deshaun Watson takes the field on Sunday, he’ll be carrying a heavy heart after sharing some devastating personal news on his Instagram story Friday morning.
Watson tweeted a photo of a solid black background with the phrase “Rest in peace, pops,” implying that his father, Don Richardson, had died.
It is well established that Richardson was absent for much of Watson’s life, leaving his mother Deann to raise him and support his siblings (he has two brothers and a sister). Watson told the Houston Chronicle in 2017 that he barely recalled seeing his father “maybe five times at most” as a child.
“My mom was basically my mother and father, so I didn’t really pay too much attention to it,” he remembered. My pals had daddies. But for me, it was simply, “Hey, my mother is the one on whom I will always rely and focus.”
