Cleveland, Ohio — When the Browns dismissed 2022 third-round selection David Bell on Thursday, cleveland.com predicted that he’d return shortly, and that came true on Saturday when he was re-signed to the practice squad.
But Bell, whom the Browns refer to as Mr. Reliable and for whom they still have a strong affinity, will most likely return to the 53-man roster by Monday.
The Bell waiver was a textbook example of Browns roster gymnastics, with the team making an apparently baffling manoeuvre to fit another player on the 53-man roster. In this case, it was to sign receiver Jaelon Darden from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday, allowing him to return punts and maybe kickoffs against the Cowboys.
They also promoted cornerback Mike Ford and offensive tackle Germain Ifedi off the practice squad. Ford is an exceptional special teams player, while Ifedi will give depth at both tackle positions. The roster movements will most likely become less awkward as the weeks pass, with players going on injured reserve for at least four weeks and slots opening up organically.
