Sean Payton hands rookie quarterback Bo Nix a throw after the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos 26-20. Nix’s performance hampered the Broncos’ chances of victory, as he threw two costly interceptions to Seahawks defenders.
Nix finished his first regular-season start with 26/42 throwing for 138 yards and two interceptions.
Sean Payton defended Bo Nix.
Following the Broncos’ loss, Payton stated that Nix gave the squad a shot to win. According to Will Petersen of Denver Sports, Payton believes the offensive line needs to improve its blocking abilities. He blamed the receivers for the dropped passes.
“We’ll watch the tape, but he offered us the opportunity. Our defence was mediocre at best. At one point during the game, I stepped to the bench and told the receivers, ‘Let’s go. I’m not sure how many drops we had, but wow, let’s help this guy,” Payton stated.
Payton didn’t stop with the offensive line and receivers. Payton criticized the running backs for not being effective enough.
Everyone except Nix was to blame for the Denver Broncos’ offence.
“I think this, I don’t know how many balls we dropped,” Payton blurted out. “For any quarterback playing, we’ve got to be more effective running the football… not nearly good enough.”
The Broncos ran 25 times for 99 yards, averaging little under 4 yards per carry. Nix was the Broncos’ leading rusher. He rushed five times for 35 yards and one touchdown.
Payton stated that the entire squad needs to improve for Nix this season.
“We just need to be better around him. “That’s my impressions from just watching it without looking at the tape,” Payton stated.
The Broncos will play a stingy defence in week two.
The offence should play better. However, this does not excuse Nix’s turnovers. Nix should be more careful with the ball. At worst, the Broncos require Nix to be an excellent game manager. If Nix had not turned the ball over, the Broncos would most likely be up 1-0.
Nix and the offence face a difficult matchup next week. The Broncos will face the Pittsburgh Steelers, who allowed only 10 points to Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1.
