Bo Nix, the Denver Broncos’ rookie quarterback, will have a difficult month ahead of him.
Mike Macdonald won his first game as Pete Carroll’s replacement in Seattle thanks to a stout defence that shut down Nix, the draft’s 12th overall pick. Nix scored a touchdown in the final minutes on Sunday, making the Broncos’ 26-20 loss feel more manageable.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, coached by Mike Tomlin, will visit Denver on Sunday. After that, Nix will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coached by Todd Bowles, on the East Coast, followed by the New York Jets, managed by Robert Saleh.
Nix will go up against four of the NFL’s best defensive wits right immediately. He claimed the starting quarterback job this summer after a stellar preseason performance in which he guided the Broncos to six scoring drives in seven possessions.
However, this was against backups and third-stringers from the Colts and Packers.
Mr. Nix, welcome to the real NFL, where there are no basic defences, road games are noisy, and defensive coordinators strive diligently to attack young quarterbacks.
Following the game, Broncos coach Sean Payton stated that the loss in Nix’s difficult debut was due as much to Denver’s inadequate supporting cast as to the rookie quarterback. Nix had more college starts (61 at Auburn and Oregon) than any other quarterback in NCAA history.
The Broncos struggled with a shaky offensive line, early ball drops, and stumbling running backs.
Payton called Denver’s pass protection “average at best” and went to the bench to encourage the offence, saying, “Let’s go!” Let us aid this individual.”
After studying the game tape on Monday, Payton defended Nix and criticized his teammates for failing to back the rookie adequately.
“We need to be better around him,” Payton stated. “And we will be.”
However, Nix struggled throughout his professional debut. He completed 26 of 42 throws for 132 yards with no touchdowns, two interceptions (both into double coverage), and two sacks, resulting in a 47.5 passer rating.
