The Detroit Lions have been hit with some bad news ahead of their highly anticipated rematch against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Head coach Dan Campbell revealed on Tuesday that quarterback Jared Goff and new defensive signing DJ Reader are both dealing with injuries that could see them miss not only the upcoming game but also a few more in the coming weeks.
In a press conference, Campbell expressed his frustration over the situation but remained cautiously optimistic about their recovery timelines. “It’s tough to lose guys like Jared and DJ at this point in the season, but we have to be smart with their health. They’re both dealing with some nagging issues, and we don’t want to rush them back and risk further damage,” Campbell said.
Goff, the team’s franchise quarterback, reportedly suffered a minor ankle sprain during last week’s game. Although the injury is not considered serious, the team’s medical staff has advised caution, leading to the decision that Goff might sit out this weekend. Campbell mentioned that Goff’s status is day-to-day, but there’s a chance he could miss multiple games.
On the defensive side, DJ Reader, a key offseason acquisition for the Lions, has been struggling with a lingering groin injury. Reader, who was signed to bolster the Lions’ defensive line, has been a solid contributor so far this season. However, the coaching staff is wary of aggravating his injury, particularly with several key matchups on the horizon. Like Goff, Reader is expected to be out for at least the upcoming game against the Buccaneers.
Campbell emphasized the importance of stepping up in the absence of these key players. “We have a deep roster, and this is a chance for other guys to make their mark. We’ll adjust our game plan accordingly,” Campbell noted.
As the Lions gear up for the pivotal clash against the Bucs, fans will be anxiously awaiting updates on the health of two of their most important players.
