Some commentators are urging the New York Giants to contemplate a move under centre after quarterback Daniel Jones struggled in Week 1. Following Jones’ underwhelming performance against the Minnesota Vikings (22 completions on 42 attempts for 186 yards, two interceptions, and a pick-six), Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggests the Giants consider trading for former New York Jets and current Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson.
In his “2024 NFL Trade Block Big Board” column, Knox claims that Wilson, who has dropped to third on the Broncos’ depth chart behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham, may be a disposable asset for Denver. Wilson, the Jets’ former No. 2 overall choice, has had his own issues, with a 12-21 career record and more interceptions (25) than touchdowns (23) in three seasons in New York. However, with the Broncos’ increased quarterback depth, he might be available for a reasonable cost–a late Day 3 draft pick or a pick trade.
The conversation comes at a vital time for the Giants, who, despite possessing Drew Lock as a proven backup, are looking into potential long-term quarterback possibilities. Jones, who signed a four-year, $160 million extension in March 2023, has yet to provide the promised results, with a 22-37-1 record in six seasons. While there is no sign of a change before this Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders, Giants management may be considering their options. With Jones’ future unknown, New York may investigate options, particularly if the offence continues to underperform. Even yet, Wilson — the league’s worst quarterback a year ago and an afterthought in a terrible Denver offence — is unlikely to improve.
If New York pursues Wilson, it might indicate a pivot in their overall approach to locate a franchise quarterback capable of routinely competing in the NFC East. As suspicion mounts, all eyes will be on Jones and the Giants’ front office as they prepare for a potentially important season.
