Last week, Devaughn Vele led the Denver Broncos in receptions in a Week 1 loss to Seattle. He will not be able to view the field seven days later.
Vele was declared out for the Broncos’ Week 2 game against Pittsburgh due to a rib ailment that forced him to miss all three days of practice this week.
“We’ll have some options,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said about replacing Vele.
The rookie seventh-round pick was the lone Broncos player on the 53-man roster who was declared out for the Steelers game. Left tackle Garett Bolles, centre Luke Wattenberg, and wide receiver Josh Reynolds are all healthy. Each of them had full practice workloads Friday after being limited on Thursday and sitting out on Wednesday.
Devaughn Vele concluded Week 1 with a team-high 8 receptions for 39 yards. He didn’t get much yardage after the catch as the Broncos struggled to make explosive plays, but he did improve on a training camp in which he established himself as a solid short- to intermediate-range threat, allowing him to make the team over more established options like Tim Patrick.
Facing Seattle’s first-teamers on Sunday was a step up.
“Obviously, guys are a little bit better,” Vele stated following the game. “You know, you’re running with the ones, and you get various glances. They bring in the entire playbook. So it’s a terrific opportunity for you to learn rapidly and find your spot on the team.”
Devaughn Vele has a berth, but he will have to wait at least another week to play.
