DeVonta Smith, a wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, was involved in a dangerous incident on Sunday when he was struck hard by a New Orleans Saints defence. That blow jarred his helmet loose, but no flag was thrown.
After seeing the clip, many people believed Payton Turner had added insult to injury by performing a horrible deed. He has now replied to the claims.
Smith caught a pass in the second half of action, with the Eagles behind the Saints 3-0. He was soon wrapped up and forced backwards by a New Orleans tackler, but the referees refused to call the play dead.
With no whistle sounding, a few more Saints joined in on the tackle. A backside tackler delivered the finishing blow, sending Smith to the ground.
Replays revealed the aftermath of the play, with DeVonta Smith lying motionless on the ground.
Some people noticed Payton Turner spitting at Smith as he got to his feet.
Payton Turner disputed the online charges soon after the game.
“Y’all reaching,” he wrote in a reply to X. “I would never do something like that. “Bless you all.”
Turner insists he had no intention of spitting on DeVonta Smith, even though others saw it differently in the replays. He is out to clear his name!
Payton Turner and the Saints would lose the game 15-12, dropping to 2-1 on the season.
