Two Denver Broncos players have been fined by the NFL following their Week 2 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers for illegal hits that violated league safety protocols. The fines, which amount to a total of $25,000, target linebacker Malik Reid and safety Kareem Jackson, both of whom were flagged during the game for unnecessary roughness and dangerous plays.
Reid, known for his aggressive pass-rushing style, was fined $10,000 for a late hit on Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett during the third quarter. The play occurred as Pickett attempted to scramble out of the pocket, only to be hit from behind by Reid after the whistle had blown. While the hit did not result in an injury, it drew immediate flags from officials and was reviewed for potential targeting.
Jackson, a veteran safety with a reputation for hard-hitting defense, was fined $15,000 for a helmet-to-helmet collision with Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson during the second quarter. Jackson’s hit left Johnson shaken up but fortunately able to return later in the game. NFL safety guidelines prohibit direct helmet-to-helmet contact, especially with defenseless players, leading to Jackson’s significant penalty.
Both players have expressed frustration with the fines, with Jackson defending his hit as an “instinctive play” in the heat of competition. Reid also spoke out, stating that his hit was not intended to cause harm and that he was merely trying to make a play.
The Broncos’ coaching staff has not issued an official statement regarding the fines but acknowledged the need to avoid penalties in future games. Head coach Sean Payton, in his post-game press conference, emphasized the importance of playing physical but within the rules, noting that unnecessary penalties can shift momentum in tight games.
The Steelers went on to win the matchup 24-17, improving to a 2-0 record for the season. Meanwhile, the Broncos face increased scrutiny as they prepare for their Week 3 matchup, hoping to clean up their defense and avoid further disciplinary action from the league.
