Among a long number of injuries for the Detroit Lions on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, it didn’t even merit a status report during the game or any explanation afterward. Marcus Davenport, an edge rusher, momentarily left the game but immediately returned.
Well, no news seems to be bad news.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Monday afternoon, Davenport sustained a serious elbow injury and may be sidelined for the season pending the results of more tests.
“#Lions pass-rusher Marcus Davenport suffered what appears to be a serious and significant elbow injury in Sunday’s game, sources say,” Rapoport said on Monday morning. “Davenport, who placed a sleeve on it and attempted to return, could be out for the season. “He is currently undergoing additional tests.”
As Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press noted and Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit documented, the play on which Davenport was injured was quite obvious. He collapses to the ground cradling his arm after attempting to disengage from a block, but returns to the game wearing a sleeve.
We also have an end zone angle that offers us a better look at a dirty move by Cardinals left tackle Paris Johnson.
Davenport, who missed Week 2 due to a groin issue, played 40 plays on Sunday.
Signing poses an injury risk. Marcus Davenport reaches maximum potential for the Lions.
Unfortunately, injuries have been a major part of Davenport’s career, preventing him from fulfilling the potential that earned him a first-round draft pick in 2018. He missed all but four games for the Minnesota Vikings last year due to an ankle ailment, and he has never played more than 500 snaps in a single season.
The Lions made a calculated risk to improve their edge rusher position by signing Davenport to a one-year, $6.5 million contract in March, with a total of $850,000 connected to per-game active bonuses ($50,000 per week). Following a strong performance in Week 1, he missed Week 2. Depending on further news and confirmation from the team, he could be out for the 2024 season before September ends.
