The Denver Broncos wanted to improve their linebacker depth and are looking at free agency.
Alex Singleton and Cody Barton will start, with Justin Strnad, a core special teamer, and Kristian Welch, a mostly special teamer, in reserve. Drew Sanders, a third-round pick in 2023, is on the physically unable to perform list due to an Achilles injury.

“Kwon Alexander, 30, is attempting to play for a 10th season,” 9News’ Mike Klis said on X on September 24. “He’s started for Tampa Bay, the 49ers, the Saints (under [Broncos head coach Sean] Payton in 2020-21), the Jets, and the Steelers. He tore his Achilles last November, over 11 months ago. Should be prepared to travel.”
The Buccaneers drafted Alexander in the fourth round in 2015. He spent four seasons there, making it to the Pro Bowl in 2017.
He signed with the 49ers as a free agent in 2019 before being transferred to the Saints in 2020.
Alexander, who has made $33.8 million in his career, had a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Steelers. He might be an inexpensive addition to his eventual new squad. In addition to the Broncos, Alexander has recently worked out for the Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings.

Alexander started two of the Steelers’ nine games in 2023, totaling 41 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception, and 1 pass deflection. His season was cut short by a torn Achilles, but he’s been training in cleats since April.
Alexander started 12 of the Jets’ 17 games in 2022. He recorded 69 tackles, six stops behind the line of scrimmage, one forced fumble, and one deflection.
This is a continuation of the strategy that began at the conclusion of the preseason.
“Per sources, one position Broncos looking to add depth: ILB,” Klis wrote on X in August. “Alex Singleton is an excellent pitcher; Cody Barton is the other starter. Then there’s Justin Strnad, a solid special teams player since 2021, and newcomer Levelle Bailey. We hope to sign Jonas Griffith back to PS. But the team is looking.
Bailey is still part of the practice squad. Griffith, on the other hand, needed surgery to treat an ACL injury, which kept him out for the whole 2023 season as well as the final eight games of the 2022 season.

Alexander would be a valuable depth player for the Broncos. Barton and Singleton sit atop the depth chart. Barton signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract in free agency and received the team’s top grade in Week 3, according to Pro Football Focus.
Singleton is ninth in combined tackles entering Week 4.
Singleton took over as the Broncos’ signal caller in his third season, after Josey Jewell left for the Carolina Panthers in free agency.
The Broncos defence is ranked third in yards and sixth in points allowed. That eliminates the need for immediate action. However, taking stock of Alexander’s current fitness level could prove useful in the future.
