The Buffalo Bills have added speed and versatility to their practice squad by signing rookie wide receiver Ahmarean Brown as part of a series of roster adjustments.
On September 26, the Bills announced Brown’s signing, while also promoting offensive lineman Will Clapp from the practice squad and placed offensive lineman Tylan Grable on injured reserve.
Brown is known as a quick receiver and “gadget” player, and he signed with the Cleveland Browns after going undrafted.
Bills Add Speed to Practice Squad.
Though Brown will begin his career on the practice squad, SI.com writer Kyle Silaygi believes his “blazing” speed could one day help him make the regular roster. Brown finished his five-year collegiate career with 92 receptions for 1,136 yards and nine touchdowns, according to Silagyi.
Silagyi stated that Brown received some attention following his final season at South Carolina.
“Brown is perhaps the most intriguing part of Thursday’s manoeuvres, as the rookie has the makings of a potentially interesting gadget player,” Silagyi said. “At roughly 5-foot-8, 170 pounds, he’s a bit undersized, but he’s a speedster, clocking in at 4.31 seconds in both the 40-yard dash and shuttle drill at South Carolina’s Pro Day this past March.”
Ahmarean Brown’s transition to the NFL
Brown caught two catches for 26 yards with the Browns during the preseason before being dismissed at the roster cutdown. He cleared waivers and remained a free agent until signing with the Bills this week.
Brown had already discussed his transition to the NFL, claiming he was trying hard to catch up.
“I can’t lie to you, the first couple weeks whoo,” Brown stated on a recent episode of The Dawgs Podcast. “It was hard because they threw a lot at you. They don’t expect you to learn everything right soon, but as competitors and beginners, we don’t want to make mistakes. To make the finest first impression, I studied until I fell asleep. I know this game is more mental than physical, so I’ve simply been trying to establish a routine for how to manage things.”
Barring an injury, Brown may struggle to make it onto Buffalo’s active squad. The squad assembled a deep wide receiving corps in the summer and currently leads the league in offence, averaging 37.3 points per game.
Following the departures of the team’s top two wide receivers, Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis, quarterback Josh Allen has spread the ball evenly among the mostly new group of wide outs. This season, six different players have caught touchdowns, while five had at least five receptions.
The Bills’ practice squad also includes other athletes who fit Brown’s profile. Wide receiver K.J. Hamler was a versatile asset in the preseason, playing wide receiver and even running back in the team’s last game against the Carolina Panthers. Hamler carried three times for 21 yards and a touchdown in the August 24 loss.
