The Detroit Lions have acquired veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson to their roster ahead of the Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He was added to the active roster on Thursday. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter broke the news of the agreement on social media. Robinson was on the Lions’ practice squad, but he could get additional playing time with the team this week.
He only played one snap for the Lions in their win over the Arizona Cardinals last weekend and did not record a catch. Detroit could use another pass catcher in the lineup, especially with tight end Sam LaPorta battling an ankle issue. Robinson offers the Lions a veteran presence in their wide receiver room as they seek to get their season back on track.
Robinson was one of the top wide receivers in the NFL a few years ago, but he has since declined due to age and injuries. His best overall season came in 2015 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, when he caught 80 passes for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. The 2015 season marked his sole appearance in the Pro Bowl.
Robinson was also the NFL receiving touchdowns co-leader, alongside Brandon Marshall of the New York Jets and Doug Baldwin of the Seattle Seahawks. He spent four seasons in Jacksonville before signing a three-year, $42 million deal with the rival Chicago Bears in 2018. His finest season with the Bears came in 2020, when he had 102 catches for 1,250 yards and six touchdowns. His addition to the Lions could benefit quarterback Jared Goff.
Along with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and newly signed Tim Patrick, the Lions could have a solid receiving core. Robinson will most likely slot in as Detroit’s No. 4 option heading forward. Before signing Robinson to the practice squad, Lions general manager Brad Holmes stated that the team was a long-time supporter of his. “Allen Robinson, he was a guy that we wanted to add in free agency a couple of years ago.” After Detroit signed Robinson to the practice squad, Lions general manager Brad Holmes said the following.
“Obviously, a Detroit native, but that’s not why he’s here; he’s another person who can step in and we know he can play. So the priority right now is to get them acclimated.” Last season, he played 17 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite catching 34 catches for 280 yards, the veteran wide receiver did not score a touchdown this season. If he can assist the Lions offence become even more exciting, it will be a success.
