During Game 2 of the National League Division Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, Manny Machado threw a baseball into the Dodgers’ dugout, and the ball nearly hit Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
On Monday, Roberts described Machado’s throw as “unsettling.”
“I hadn’t noticed it at the time. “I really didn’t,” Roberts told reporters. “I did not notice it. I saw the video. And that was unsettling. Obviously, I have a history with Manny [Machado] from years ago. There was intention behind it. It did not nearly strike me since there was a net.
Roberts continued, “And that was really unpleasant. If it was intended for me, I would be offended; it’s quite insulting. So I’m not sure what his intention is. I do not wish to speak for him. But I watched the video. And the ball was aimed toward me, with something behind it. But I’m not sure what led to that. I didn’t see it live, but I did watch the video.
MLB is presently reviewing the video of the throw at Roberts, but according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, neither club is likely to face penalty for what happened in Game 2.
Padres manager Mike Shildt has subsequently addressed Machado’s throw.
“No, I don’t think there was any intent behind that,” Shildt said on Tuesday.
Shildt appeared to criticize Roberts for his comments about Machado.
“I am not, and never will be, disparaging another player on another team, particularly somebody I have previously managed. I will not do it to a collective team. “That’s not how I want to operate,” Shildt stated.
The Padres and Dodgers will face off again on Tuesday in Game 3 of the National League Division Series at Petco Park.
