PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool allows users to make their own transactions. One user requested that the Maple Leafs acquire Blake Coleman from the Calgary Flames.
The Maple Leafs acquired:
Blake Coleman
2026: third-round selection (Vancouver)
The Flames acquire:
Timothy Liljegren
Nick Robertson
2027 second-round selection
The suggested trade makes sense since Toronto gains a legitimate NHL player with extensive Stanley Cup experience in exchange for two players who may be traded. However, both are young, which helps with the Flames’ rebuild.
Coleman is in the fourth year of his six-year, $29.4 million contract. The veteran forward could be Toronto’s third-line centre, providing depth scoring while also shutting down rival top lines. Coleman was an important player of the Tampa Bay Lightning team that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. Coleman had 54 points last season with Calgary, scoring 30 goals and 24 assists in 78 games.
In exchange, Toronto would trade Liljegren, a 2017 first-round pick. The Swedish defenseman signed a two-year, $6 million agreement this offseason, but he dropped down the depth chart and began the season as a healthy scratch.
Robertson, meanwhile, asked for a trade this offseason but ended up signing a one-year $875,000 contract extension. The 2019 second-round pick has played in 89 games, scoring 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points.
The Maple Leafs are looking to trade Liljegren
Liljegren was supposed to be a major member of the Maple Leafs’ blue line, but he has battled to remain in the lineup.
After startin the season as Toronto’s eighth defenseman and being a health scratch, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that the Maple Leafs are trying to trade Liljegren.
“It appears that Toronto is striving to find a landing location for Timothy Liljegren. In his 32 Thoughts post, Friedman stated, “He’s down the depth chart, which no one is happy with.”
Liljegren was a healthy scratch for the Maple Leafs’ first two regular season games of the 2024-25 NHL season. Despite being a former first-round choice who signed an extension this winter, new head coach Craig Berube was unimpressed with Liljegren’s performance throughout training camp.
“Lily needs to get things done quickly. “He needs to be a little heavier in his battles, move pucks faster, and simplify his game,” Berube stated. “He’s clearly battling. He wants to be a guy in the lineup every night, which is fantastic. However, sometimes you put too much on your plate. Simplify the game slightly more. And execute your job as a defenseman, killing plays and being heavy.”
Liljegren has skated in 196 games, scoring 14 goals and 51 assists for 65 points.
Flames Coach Isn’t Worried About Outside Expectations
Ryan Huska is entering his second season as Flames coach.
Calgary is anticipated to be one of the worst teams in the NHL entering the 2024-25 season, but Huska says he and his teammates are unconcerned about the outside noise.
“To me, that’s outside noise, and I’m going to attempt to keep it away. First and foremost, we have no control over this. You cannot control what others think or say about you. So, why waste your time and efforts on this? “I go back to the standard,” Huska told Sportsnet.
“What matters is what the guys expect from each other in the locker room. This is what we will determine as a group. You can compete while also working. “That is entirely within your control,” Huska remarked.
The Flames opened the 2024-25 NHL season with a 6-5 overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks.
