The Washington Commanders released quarterback Sam Hartman on Thursday.

The move comes after Marcus Mariota, the backup to rookie Jayden Daniels, dressed for his first game of the season Sunday. He missed the first four weeks to heal from groin and pectoral problems.

The Commanders kept Jeff Driskel as their third quarterback and fired Hartman. Hartman may yet make the team’s practice squad.

Hartman, 25, joined the Commanders as an undrafted free agent this spring following a successful college career at Wake Forest (2018-22) and Notre Dame (2023).

 

Before transferring to South Bend, he led the ACC with 38 touchdown passes for Wake in 2022. In his only season with the Fighting Irish, he completed 63.5% of his throws for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
