The New York Mets quickly lost Game 1 of the NLCS. Kodai Senga rapidly shown that he lacked the ability to throw strikes and thus could not get past the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup. He lasted 1.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs on two hits and four walks as the Dodgers cruised to a 9-0 victory.
It’s uncertain when Senga will pitch again for the Mets in the playoffs, or even if he will, given how poorly he performed in Game 1 against the Dodgers. There have even been calls for Senga to be removed from the Mets’ roster after he threw only 10 of 30 pitches for strikes on Sunday night.
Regardless, according to Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets have no intentions to remove Senga from the NLCS roster. In fact, following their 7-3 Game 2 win over the Dodgers, “Mets officials said they consider Senga a healthy player, and aren’t discussing removing him from the roster because of injury.”
Will Kodai Senga pitch again for the Mets in the NLCS?
With a World Series berth at stake, the Mets will throw everything at the Dodgers in an effort to be the club that stands out at the end of the season. However, with the NLCS still in its early stages, there is no need for the Mets to make a decision on Kodai Senga’s roster status.
If Senga pitches again for the Mets in the NLCS, it will most likely be in a crucial Game 5, but he may require an additional day or two of recuperation after his disastrous Game 1 start. But, by then, will the Mets trust him enough to throw him the ball in a possible Game 6 or 7?
Senga did not last long as the Mets’ starter in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies. (He pitched only 2.0 innings.) At best, he’s serving as the Mets’ opener, and that may be his future role as his leash grows shorter as the team progresses deeper into the playoffs.
