The Las Vegas Raiders desperately need a quarterback, and if they continue to play as they have through the first six weeks of the NFL season, they will have a chance to choose one of the best prospects. In the 2024 NFL draft, the Raiders fell victim to the wait-and-see strategy, with six quarterbacks taken off the board before they had an opportunity to select a player at No. 13.
They ended up selecting tight end Brock Bowers, which is a nice consolation prize, but it meant another year in quarterback purgatory. Neither Gardner Minshew, who began the season, nor Aidan O’Connell, who is presently behind centre, have given any indication that they can be a solution. Because of these issues, fans appear to be completely focused on the draft.
This is not surprising given that the NFL draft provides something to look forward to for more than half of the league’s fan groups, but the Raiders appear to be so poor that they will be near the top of the draft board. Something that their fans should be excited about.
However, according to ESPN’s most recent mock draft, the Raiders are expected to trade multiple picks to move up from seventh to fourth overall. Who are they dealing for, you might wonder? None other than Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward.
ESPN’s Jordan Reid proposed a deal that he believes the Raiders may make with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who do not currently need a quarterback. “In April, the Raiders watched six quarterbacks come off the board before they were on the clock at No. 13,” according to Reid. “They may not want to risk waiting it out again in 2025, so I could see them paying a second- and fifth-round pick to Jacksonville to move up three spots from No. 7 overall here. (Las Vegas recently acquired a conditional third-round pick in the Davante Adams trade, which may also be utilized to move up for a quarterback.)” Ward presently has the fourth-highest Heisman chances, according FanDuel, and has led Miami to its best start since 2017.
Ward has passed for more over 2,200 yards and 20 touchdowns in six games, with only five interceptions. He has a gigantic arm and is noted for his unsettling poise. He would immediately instill confidence in this fan base, maybe helping the Raiders get back on track. While some fans may associate Shedeur Sanders with the Raiders, this fake has him going No. 1 to the Cleveland Browns.
