SAN DIEGO (AP)— NL hitting champion Luis Arraez of the San Diego Padres underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a damaged ligament in his left thumb.
The Padres expect Arraez to begin an offseason hitting program in roughly eight weeks and to be fully recovered by the start of spring training.
In a social media post featuring himself in a hospital bed, Arraez stated that he underwent surgery “after pushing through an injured half of the season.” Despite the pain, I continued to play, but it was evident that surgery was required for complete recovery. The treatment went nicely, and I’m now focused on healing and returning.
Arraez hit.314 to become the only player since the 1800s to win batting titles with three different teams. He repeated the feat in 2023 with Miami and 2022 with Minnesota. The Padres acquired him from the Marlins in early May.
Arraez was nominated to the National League All-Star team, but he did not participate due to an injury.
The Padres swept the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card Series, but lost in five games to the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series.
